Spare

I wouldn’t call myself a “Royal Watcher”, but the family has always intrigued me. The first biographical book I ever read was about Princess Diana. I had no idea who she was at first, I just knew her name was the same as my middle name. When more of the drama of Harry and Meghan started to overtake the world, it was hard not to notice…and so I followed along here and there. It was hard for me to fully form an opinion on it all because the most of my information was from the press. As a journalism major, I knew that I shouldn’t take those words as straight fact. Especially being mainly from gossip columns. Then finally came the Oprah interview, then the Netflix special, and finally this book. I knew I wanted to read it, so the day it came out, I went to pick up a copy. Prince Harry really lays everything our in his memoir…some I had heard before, but most I hadn’t. From his childhood, his mother’s death, his school days, soldier days, all the good charity work and finally his life with Meghan. I found myself pausing at times a lot during my reading. Shocked by what I was reading..especially in regards to William’s treatment of Harry throughout their life. How could his own brother let his jealousy of the “Spare” outweigh the onslaught of hate and hurt the press was causing to Harry and Meghan? I don’t give a damn about the idea that “royalty is in the public eyes, they should expect the harsh press”. They’re humans too. No one royal, celebrity or commoner deserves the kind of venom the press has thrown at countless royals. Overall, this book was very good and I am happy for Prince Harry and Meghan for escaping the “Institution” of the Royal Family and having the courage to tell us all their side of the story.

Teen Wolf: The Movie

Like all fans of this show, I can agree that I was both excited and nervous for the movie. After watching, I can say my nervousness was valid. This movie leaves me with a lot of feelings in regards to a show that consumed much of my high school life…and most aren’t good. It follows a typical reunion movie vibe but leaves open SO MANY holes. Why did Scott and Malia break up? How does Derek have a son? Why was Liam in Japan? The list goes on! There’s parts I did enjoy. The concept is a good thought. Especially since season 3 of the show, where the movies big bad was originally seen, was my favorite. However, I think there were a lot of things they could’ve done differently. Why isn’t Stiles there? The Nogitsune, I’d argue, impacted him the most during the show (I mean it did basically possess Stiles). Also, DO NOT get me started on that ending. Why was Derek the sacrificial lamb? How is that “full circle”? In my opinion it should’ve been either Allison or Scott. Allison is meant to be dead anyways. The only reason she’s back is because of the Nogitsune’s revenge. For Scott, I know he’s the main character, but he’s always been gung-ho about sacrificing himself for the pack, the ones he loves…if he had done that it’d prove even more how much of a ‘True Alpha’ he is. Overall, this movie was okay. I honestly, won’t watch it again. Instead I’ll rewatch the show’s 6 seasons and pretend it ended there.

Comfort Media

Think about when you’ve been having a long day… or when you aren’t feeling the best… or even when you just feel like you need something to keep your mind off of everything going on in the world. What do you find yourself being drawn to? Some music that you associate with driving down the road, friends by your side? A fanfic that you found late one night and had you kicking your feet with how cute the plot was? Or maybe even a show that you know more dialogue to than you’d like to admit? Any piece of media that makes you feel at home, safe, relaxed… like you can turn your brain off for a while. That’s what I’d call comfort media.

Now, the idea of comfort media isn’t necessarily a new one. People have always had media that they choose to indulge in no matter how many times they’ve watched, listened, or read it. However, during the pandemic, when our world was literally turned upside down, this idea became more of a forefront. It took me until the pandemic to put a name to it, and since then I’ve realized that I have a few different pieces of comfort media.

My comfort media doesn’t have a theme… an anime, a music group, literary couple fanfiction, children’s cartoon, superhero animated show, and YouTube comedy. All of these are different, but all of them bring me a sense of relaxation at different times when needed.

One of my indicators that I am building up stress  is the urge to put on ‘Ouran High School Host Club’. This was one of the first anime I ever watched, and it remains one of my all-time favorites. I could quote countless episodes, and even list their titles in order (This is no lie, my friend can attest to looking at the episode list while I recited the titles off on a video call). ‘Ouran’ is my comfort because I don’t need to think while watching it. I can put it on in the background and easily be doing work… all while keeping focused and gradually calming myself down.

The shows ‘Scooby-Doo’ and ‘Young Justice’ season 1 do the same thing. ‘Scooby-Doo’ could be listed as my favorite piece of media ever. It’s classic, the stories are fun, the characters are relatable, and most importantly… It’s my childhood. To this day, I still have two shelves worth of the ‘Scooby-Doo’ movies and show volumes. It doesn’t matter if I know who the ‘Miner 49er’ is already – I’m going to watch the episode and follow along as the gang finds clues, gets chased, sets a trap, and finally catches the criminal.

‘Young Justice’ is, overall, an underrated show in the DC Universe. It was what really roped me back into liking superheroes. Growing up I watched ‘Teen Titans’, but I fell away from superhero media for a few years. Then, a friend suggested I watch ‘Young Justice’, and I was right back in. All 4 seasons of this show are great, but if I’m going to do a simple rewatch, it’s going to be the first season. There’s something about the original team of Aqualad, Robin, Kid Flash, Superboy, M’Gann and Artemis that always puts a smile on my face. The characters all have great chemistry, the storylines for the first season were clever, thought out, and reasonably challenging for the target audience. (Though not too complicated where you have no clue what’s going on) So, anytime I am beginning to feel my anxiety building I can throw ‘Ouran’, ‘Scooby-Doo’, or ‘Young Justice’ on the TV and instantly relax.

When I am just having a bad day, there are a few pieces of media I’ll turn to. First is something every nerd knows about: fanfiction. I read fanfiction for basically every media I enjoy, but there’s a specific kind I turn to when I need a smile:‘Percabeth’ fanfics. ‘Percabeth’ is the pairing of Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase from Rick Riordan’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ series. I absolutely adore this couple more than words could describe. They’ve been through hell within their stories (I mean they’ve literally walked through Tartarus together). The fanfics I read give them the happiness and love they deserve. Instead of focusing on  battles and life-threatening situations, the fics I  read for this couple focus on the mundane. We get to see between the battles, helping bandage each other up and even watch them go through relationship growing pains. My favorite is glancing into their future, watching them live out their lives attending New Rome University together. Whatever the situation, seeing the creative stories fans write for these two never fails to make me smile.

The next thing I turn to on almost a daily basis (even when I’m not having a bad day) are ‘Smosh Videos’. I used to watch Smosh back when they first started on YouTube: Just two friends making silly skits and videos. I had no idea they eventually grew into a company with a whole cast, crew, and studio… until my friend put on an episode of ‘Eat It or Yeet It’ because they knew how picky an eater I am. Since then, I am always watching their newest videos. I even have the notifications on! The variety of their videos are fun and can appeal to many people. For example, you can find a plethora of new party games to play with friends from Smosh’s ‘Board AF’ series. Even my dad gets a laugh out of the crazy food crimes Garrett commits for ‘Eat It or Yeet It’!

My final piece of comfort media, the one that I truly hold closest to my heart, are ‘BTS Music and Videos’. Basically everyone has heard the name BTS, and there’s not really a need to explain why. They’re global superstars, not only for their music and talent, but because of their meaningful messages and love they share. I have so much to thank BTS for… they helped me begin to see my own worth and learn to love myself, they introduced me to a culture that led me to an amazing year of living abroad… and most importantly because of them I have two of the most important people in my life. Anytime I listen to BTS’ music or watch one of their videos I can’t help but smile. Nothing but good memories come from them, and that’s the ultimate comfort.

Comfort media can be different for everyone, and it can shift throughout our lives. However, one thing remains the same: These pieces of entertainment are a simple place to turn to when you just need to sit back, relax, and let the world fall away for a bit.

Thank you for reading! This is all simply my own opinion and thoughts on the concept of comfort media. I’d love to know your thoughts and what makes comforting entertainment for you! Feel free to comment and even share your comfort media too!

Chainsaw Man

When I first heard about this show I wasn’t fully convinced I’d like it. I haven’t watched a whole lot of gory shows so I wasn’t sure. However, the power of the ‘Popular Anime’ pressure finally got to me…and I’m glad it did! This was a really good show. The animation seems to be true to what MAPPA has been doing lately, and it’s a cool style to the world of anime. This first season, though only 12 episodes, feels like so much happened..but then also like not a lot happened at all. I enjoy our main trio of Denji, Aki and Power. Though poor Aki must feel like a tired dad sometimes looking out for the other two. As someone who hasn’t read the manga, I’m concerned for Aki’s future for a few reasons. (Not just cause the curse devil told him he’s got only two years left) He seems to have a lot of background trauma that I feel we’ve only begun to see. Makima is a character I am not completely sure of. She seems overall fine, but something about her just puts me off. I’m sure a lot more is to come with the next season, and I’m excited to see Denji grow more. Overall, this was a very good show, and I’m both excited and scared for what’s to come.

I’m the Villainess so I’m Taming the Final Boss

Normally I don’t like isekais, but this one I definitely enjoyed a lot. The whole concept, while being one thats popular lately, is interesting and played out nicely. Aileen is a great heroine. She’s got the personality of a typical villainess, but also the heart of a true heroine. The way she cares for Claude, the other friends, and all the demons makes my heart happy. Also, Claude is such a nice love interest. The author was really feeding those that love the misunderstood ‘bad guy’. I also enjoyed how as we saw the story change in Aileen’s favor, Lilia and Cedric became more villainous. Let’s be honest though, Cedric was always a jerk…like not the kind of prince deserving of Aileen or even Lilia for that matter. All three arcs covered in the show had their own merits, though the third is my favorite. Aileen not giving up on Claude, not only because of her love for him, but also for the wellbeing of the demon kind was…chefs kiss… Also, don’t get me started on how ADORABLE the demons were. I need me a Fenrir demon plushie…so cute! Overall, this was a very good show and I hope they make more seasons.

A Court of Thorns and Roses

I don’t know why it took me so long to read this book, but I am glad I finally did! It’s just the kind of stuff that interests me…adventure, fae realm, sexiness. I do really love Feyre as a heroine, she is vlever and resourceful and truly has a good heart. I am worried to see how her guilt from the final trial Under the Mountain plays out, but hopefully she’ll have a good support system. From TikTok I do know some spoilers of what’s to come but for now…I really do like Tamlin. Though some of his actions are questionable, he does seem to care for Feyre and his court. Now Rhysand? OH BOY! I need more of this man. He is SUPER FINE!! I want to unpack the layers to him (I know there’s gotta be more) and I think that’ll happen in the next book. I hope to also get to see some more Nesta and Elain. I’ll admit, Nesta really annoyed me in the beginning. Now that we (the reader) and Feyre inderstand more about her though…I don’t hate her as much. Oh! I can’t forget about my boy, Lucien. He is a very interesting character too. I hope to see more of him as well. Overall, I’d give this book a very good rating. I can’t wait to continue this series!

The Way of the Househusband Season 2

Season two of this show was just as fun and cute as the first. I really love the whole concept kf this show and think it’s a really nice slice of life show. You can have this on in the background as you work and enjoy both the show and getting your work done. Tatsu is a great character who isn’t hard to like. I love seeing his yakuza side come out when he’s trying to deal with everyday problems and chores. Also, his relationships with the other characters are all so cute. First, he is such a simp for his wife, even if it isn’t in the typical way. Second, Masa and how he looks up to Tatsu in both the world of yakuza and in the normal world is ADORABLE. Finally, his relationships with all the other community members…from the ladies in that little club, to the other yakuza members he runs into, and my favorite..the kids! It makes me really want to see Tatsu and Mika have their own kids at some point. Overall, this show is pretty average, but very enjoyable and fun to watch.

Enola Holmes 1 & 2

OH MY GOSH did I LOVE these movies! I’ve always liked stories in the world of Sherlock Holmes, but I think i like Enola much better than her big brother. Albeit all the characters are enjoyable and well written. The first film does well in setting up the world that Enola is trying to live in. We learn about her mother, we meet Tewkesbury, and we see the relationship with Enola and her two brother. All this is a great set-up for our sequel where we see Enola trying to make her way in the world as her own detective. I will say I enjoyed the second movie better than the first, but both films are truly well written and made. Seeing as these movies are inspirws by a seven book series, I hope Netflix continues to make more of these. I’d love to see Sherlock and Watson together, more of Enola and Tewksbury’s budding relationship, and overall just Enola growing and trying to make a difference in her time of women’s rights movements. Overall, I think these films earn a masterpiece rating, and I will DEFINITELY watch them both again.

Heroines Run the Show

This was an overall very cute, relaxing show to watch. The premise, while slightly cliche, is played with in a nice way. Hiyori isn’t a typical “nobody” main character whose thrown into the glamorous world of idols. She has goals and is an overall liked person. While Yujior and Aizo (our idols) have the impression of her being pretty plain, as we see them get to know her, they realize how interesting she really can be. I will say I did think our two idols were big jerks at first and I really did not like them. As the show progressed and we saw more into their personalities, I could see some appeal beginning. I would’ve loved to see more of Hiyori’s friendships though…especially with Nagisa her childhood best friend. Her two girl besties, Chizuru and Juri, were cute..and I loved that twist with Chizuru in the end. Rumor has it that a second season is coming of this show, which I look forward to. I’d like to see them explore more of Hiyori, Aizo, and Yujiro’s growing bond..as well as see Hiyori doing more to achieve her track dreams. Overall, this was a pretty average show that I’d recommend to those looking for a chill idol anime.

Batman: Hush

I enjoyed this movie a lot. I always love seeing the Bruce/Batman and Selina/Catwoman relationship on screen. They’ve always been an interesting couple, whose dynamic is fun to explore. I’m glad the movie villain didn’t end up how I thought..with Elliot being Hush.. However, having Riddler also felt weird too. I know he’s one of the lesser villains in Gotham, but this story here just felt..odd. I’d have liked to see more of how he was able to use the Lazuras Pit in the first place. Though I have qualms with Riddler being Hush, it does show a start of potential with this character. Riddler can be terrifying (like we saw in Pattinson’s Batman), but this movie’s Riddler missed the mark for me. As always, I loves seeing my boy Nightwing on screen..though I’d loved to have seen more. I also would have loved seeing more Damian too, like..WHERE WAS HE?! I’m not sure of the timeliness with the other Batman Animated Movies..maybe he was with the Titans? Either way, overall it was a VERY GOOD movie that I will watch again!
